Why Measure Conductivity?

Conductivity serves as a cost-effective, low-maintenance indicator of water quality. High-quality water with minimal contaminants exhibits low conductivity. Compared to pH measurement, conductivity requires far less maintenance and minimal calibration. Common applications include boiler feedwater, reverse osmosis (RO), and demineralizer systems.

Conductivity measurements can correlate to percentage concentration values for solutions like acids or bases, as conductivity increases with ion concentration. However, this correlation is only valid for single-chemical solutions, not mixtures.

Measurement Methods

Two primary sensor types measure conductivity:

  • Contacting Sensors: Measure conductivity by applying alternating current to immersed electrodes and measuring resulting voltage
  • Inductive (Toroidal) Sensors: Electrodeless measurement method
Measurement Accuracy Factors

Several factors can influence conductivity measurement accuracy:

  • Polarization: Affects electrode performance
  • Contamination: Deposits on electrode surfaces cause lower readings (4-pole cells prevent this)
  • Cable Resistance: Can introduce measurement errors
  • Temperature: Conductivity increases with temperature
